Happy Birthday Sophie Thomas !!! Actually, Sophie was quite happy to get older unlike most of us and particularly the fairer sex. For her turning 15 has been anticipated for a while now. 15 is the macic number for student glider pilots as it is not until your 15th birthday that you are allowed to fly solo. Solo flight has its advantages. The back seat gets really quiet... The conditions were good for a first flight. Light winds and just enough lift to make it a bit more than an extended circuit.
Obama would have been happy with the the crowd she drew with relatives and friends from all over the world coming to Boonah to witness her achievement. Sophie managed the pressure well although I think instructor John Stockwell would have been happy with a man and his dog.
Congratulations Sophie, You have completed the first stage of your training and perhaps a career. Gliding relies on the goodwill and dedictation of many club members and to all of you who contribute to the club and particularly with regards Sophie I extend my thanks.
